SRI VYASATIRTHA’S VANGA (BENGAL) VIJAYA

Sri Vyasatirtha also known as Vyasaraya or Vyasaraja Tirtha acted as spiritual master for 6 Vijayanagara emperors from Saluva Narasimha to Achyuta.

But his reach and influence were not limited to Vijayanagara Empire or South India but got spread in the North and more particularly in the Eastern India as well.

This article is about Sri Vyasatirtha’s Vanga-desha digvijaya which laid a firm foundation of Vaishnava siddhanta in the eastern parts of Bharatadesha.

Vangadesha Before Vyasatirtha

Much before Sri Vyasaraya visited present day W. Bengal, Acharya Madhva’s direct disciple Sri Narahari Tirtha firmed up Vaishnavism in Northern parts of present day Andhra Pradesh & all over Odisha state.

Thereafter, Sri Rajendra Tirtha (c.1402-40), 8th in succession to Acharya Madhva spent most of his time in the north & eastern parts of the country especially in Bengal. His successor Sri Jayadhwaja Tirtha too toured Bengal extensively. Though Sri Jayadhwaja sat on Dvaita Vedanta Peetha for mere 8 years (from 1440-48), his efforts put in the Vanga desha are still holding their effect on Bengal Vaishnavism to this day.

Alongside Sri Jayadhwaja, another disciple of Rajendra Tirtha, Sri Vishnudevacharya not only stayed in Bengal but wrote books propounding Dvaita siddhanta which were quite famous in those days. Here are the images of his vAdaratnAvali manuscript.

Thus, decades before Sri Vyasatirtha embarked on his Vangadesha yatra, his predecessors have paved the path of Tattvavada & the arrival of Vyasatirtha turned the walkway into a rAjamArga which later came to be known as Gaudiya Vaishnavism.

VYASA TIRTHA & GAUDIYA GURU PARAMPARA:

According to the genealogy accepted by Gaudiya Vaishnavas of Vangadesha, Acharya Madhva is the 5th in succession of Sri Krishna & Vyasatirtha is the 16th guru. Here is the Gauditya Guruparampara recorded by Srila Baladeva Vidyabhushana [c.1720-90].

Similar succession has been listed in “Chaitanya & his companions” authored by Dinesh Chandra Sen with a variation that Vyasatirtha comes 12th in the lineage.

But it remains undisputed that Sri Vyasatirtha appointed Lakshmitirtha or Lakshmipati Tirtha as his successor in Bengal who in turn appointed Madhavendra Puri as successor. Madhavendra Puri, the praSishya of Vyasatirtha, has been hailed as greatest Vaishnava saint who strengthened Vaishavism in eastern country & whose illustrious praSishya is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

DISCIPLES OF VYASATIRTHA FROM TODAY’S BANGLADESH:

Dinesh Chandra Sen says that some of the disciples of Madhavendra Puri who were also lived during Chaitanya’s time have hailed from present day Bangaldesh. Here are two most prominent disciples of Madhavendra who became companions of Chaitanya as well:

  • Pundarika Vidyanidhi from today’s Chittagong.
  • Madhava Mishra from present day Dhaka.

Such was the reach of Vyasatirtha & Dvaita Siddhanta in 14th-15th century Vangadesha.

BENGAL VAISHNAVISM & CHAITANYA MAHAPRABHU

With the arrival of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Dvaita philosophy was modified into vipralaMbha-bhakti. Vishnu Sarvottama tenet alone has been retained & other basic tenets of Dvaita such as Vayu Jeevottama & Rudra Devottama have been foregone.

In an interesting discussion held between a group of ‘young Madhva-s’ & Sri Bhakti Gaurava Narasingha Maharaj, latter has clarified that Gaudiyas are still following the 9 basic tenets propounded by Acharya Madhva [other tenets have been considered as ‘dogmas’]

CLOSING NOTE:

Whatever could be the deviations or variations from the Tattvavada of Acharya Madhva, the modern W. Bengal & Bangladesh were the eastern frontiers of Dvaita Vedanta Samrajya. Dineshchandra Sen has thus said:

It was Sri Vyasatirtha who firmed up the foundations of Dvaita Vedanta laid by his predecessors & the great reverence still shown by Gaudiya Vaishnavas to him is an indication of his sway over past 5 centuries.
